Palinuro is the point where the gulf of Policastro meets the gulf of Velia, and here you can find several natural caverns. The most famous one is the blue cavern, la grotta azzurra, which is illuminated by the sunlight reflected in the water. Equally fascinating is the cavern of the blood, la grotta del sangue, the cavern of the bones, la grotta delle ossa, and the cavern of the monks, la grotta dei monaci, which contains natural stalagmites.
This place is full of legends. According to one, Palinuro was the name of the steersman of a ship with refugees from Troy, and he drowned in this cape during a storm.
It is possible to arrange day trips to the caverns, starting from Pioppi and going by boat to Palinuro. On the way there, you can admire the marvellous coastline of Cilento, and to stop for some hours in calm bays only accessible by boat. For certificated divers, it is also possible to explore the beauty of the caverns on your own.
