The Blue Flag is a prestigious acknowledgment given by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education). The label works towards sustainable development at beaches and marinas through publicly awarding sites that meet strict criteria dealing with water quality. More than 30 countries are hosts of the Blue Flag, and ever since they started distributing it, Pioppi has gained the status as one of the leading Italian marinas. The main criteria to for receiving the award are:
- Available information on the beach about the Blue Flag and the water quality
- No release of industrial or other waste in the water
- Compliance with the requirements and standards for excellent bathing water quality
- Preservation of the flora and vegetation in the area
- Beach activities do not interfere with nature protection
- Facilities are adjusted to the disabled
- There are sufficient lifeguards and lifesaving equipment
- The beach facilities are properly maintained
